  • More Christmas Markets
Nathalie De Grandmont

L'AssomptionA year of novelties This year the Lanaudière region Christmas market, held in downtown L'Assomption, will showcase not just a revamped decor, but also new exhibitors and exciting new merchandise - Russian dolls for starters, a first! Some 20 local terroir producers will have on hand everything you need to prepare a multi-course holiday feast: foie gras, charcuterie, pâtés, sweetbreads, Highland beef, lamb, wines and ice ciders. They will be joined by some 30 artisans, several of whom will display their original handiwork in a new indoor section. Outside, braziers will keep shoppers warm as they sample traditional mulled wines. Every weekend, the market will come alive with choirs and special days like Family Day (December 6) featuring a pony carrousel, fun-packed demonstrations, clowns and magicians. From November 28 to December 23, Thursday to Sunday, plus December 21, 22 and 23. Free admission. 270, boulevard de l'Ange-Gardien. www.marchedenoeldelassomption.ca

Nathalie De Grandmont

Carnaval de QuébecHosted by its famous mascot, Bonhomme Carnaval, the Quebec Winter Carnival has shown absolutely no signs of abating. Quite the contrary, with the Duchesses returning. The event itself grows bigger every year, still featuring its classic icons like Bonhomme's Ice Palace, the ice canoe race, and similar crowd pleasers. Families continue to gather on the Plains of Abraham, enjoying the wide range of entertainment events or thrilling to the extreme sports competitions and other activities. Night parades remain popular, showcasing increasingly creative floats, themes and costumes. From January 29 to February 14. Effigies or entry passes cost $15 each. www.carnaval.qc.ca
  • Carpet-maintenance tips

Unlike its appearance on hard surfaces, dust isn't visible on carpets. As a result, it all too often escapes our notice as it settles into the fibres. To prolong your carpet's lifespan and maintain healthy indoor-air quality, regular maintenance is necessary.
  • What size water heater do you need?
Jacqueline Simoneau

On average, a water heater lasts for 10 to 12 years. Sooner or later, therefore, you'll need to replace yours. The warning signs are unmistakable: leaking water, rust-coloured water, rust stains around the base of the tank(to name only the most apparent). But before buying a new unit, determine how much hot water you need -your requirements may have changed over the years.
